Reading the numbers
Caffeine content varies a lot — these are typical figures from USDA and manufacturer data, but a strong home pour-over or a different brand can be 50% higher or lower.
- Coffee is the biggest everyday source: ~95 mg per 8 oz cup, more for cold brew, less for instant.
- Espresso is concentrated but small — ~63 mg per shot, less than a mug of drip.
- Energy shots and pre-workout pack the most per serving (~200 mg) — easy to overshoot your daily limit.
- Tea is gentler (~28–70 mg), and decaf still has a trace (~2 mg).
For sleep, what matters is the total and the timing — a 95 mg coffee at 4 pm can still be working at bedtime. See the half-life calculator.
